A suicide bomber killed at least 37 people, including 16 children, in a car bombing near one of Iraq's holiest Shiite shrines yesterday.
The car bombing took place in Karbala, about 50 miles south of Baghdad, at a bus station about 200 yards from the burial site of the grandson of the Islamic Prophet Muhammed.
Hospital and police officials said well over 100 others were wounded and that the casualties included Iranian and Pakistani Muslims visiting the holy site.
"All I remember was we were shopping. My father was holding my hand and suddenly there was a big explosion," cried victim Sajad Kadhim, 11, as doctors cared for his burns. I don't know where my father is. I want my father."
State television footage showed a man hugging the charred body of a child, and witnesses said the blast sent limbs flying through the air.
While suicide bombings are a regular occurrence - an insurgent also targeted Baghdad's Jadriyah bridge yesterday - attacks on shrines and holy sites cause particular unrest.
The February 2006 bombing of the Golden Mosque in Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad, racheted up violence between Sunni and Shiite Muslims and nudged Iraq toward civil war.
Yesterday, distraught Iraqis attacked police officers, angrily protesting that lax security permitted the bomber to slip through. Rioters rushed the Karbala governor's office, pelting the building with rocks and setting it on fire.
Officials sealed off the city and imposed a curfew.
"This bombing shows a security breach, and we are investigating where the shortcoming was," said Brig. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf, spokesman for the Interior Ministry.

I feel that this is a very good first quote. It does not necessarily back up the lead but I feel that it further shows the emotion that was felt by those who were victims of the explosion. The quote states emotion of how the young child felt when the bombing took place. Since it is a long quote, there are a couple of different verbs in it. However, I feel the word want is the most affective. It shows that the child is scared and really wants to be with his father and feel protected. Once again, it shows the emotion and the fear that the victim felt. The source of the quote is a young victim of the attacks. I feel that this was a good quote and that it brings out more emotion since it is from a young child.
